Breaking Barriers to Create Tobacco-Free School Districts

Less than half of Kentucky school districts were 100 percent tobacco free before 2019. In some instances, there were designated smoking areas for staff and adults were allowed to smoke at outdoor sporting events. In 2019, the Kentucky General Assembly passed a law that encouraged all schools adopt 100 percent tobacco-free policies.

The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, Kentucky Medical Association (KMA), and Coalition for a Smoke-Free Tomorrow learned the cost of signage was a barrier to school districts adopting the 100 percent smoke-free policy. Health Kentucky, KMA and the Kentucky Foundation for Medical Care teamed up to offer the signage at no cost. The program was created in consultation with the Kentucky School Boards Association.

Today, almost every school district across the Commonwealth has a 100 percent tobacco-free policy.
